The Best Photopea Alternative for Each Job in 2026

Alternatives/By Gan Liu/Sep 14, 2026/17 min read

Before you go shopping for a Photopea alternative, work out which job you are actually trying to finish. Photopea is free, opens PSD in a browser tab, reads RAW, and states that your file never leaves your device — a claim we read on its own site on 14 September 2026, not a test we ran. For layer work, alpha channels, exact pixel sizes and RAW development it is still the right answer, and nothing below beats it. What most people want when they type that search is narrower than that: remove one thing from a photo, make a phone snap look photographed, repair a damaged print. Those are generation jobs rather than editing jobs, and a per-render AI tool finishes them in one pass where Photopea needs twenty clicks and some skill. Below is each job mapped to the tool that wins it — including the five where ReelWand is the wrong choice and we say so.

Short answer: match the job, not the app

Every roundup we counted on this keyword hands you a ranked list — five apps, seven, fifteen, depending on who wrote it — as though people use Photopea for one undifferentiated activity called "editing." They do not. A Photopea session is almost always one specific errand, and the right replacement changes completely depending on which errand it is. Find your row.

The dividing line is simple: if the job is move these pixels precisely, an editor wins. If the job is make this look like something it currently does not, a generator wins. Photopea is superb at the first and has almost nothing for the second. Most of the frustration that sends people looking for alternatives is the second job being attempted with the first kind of tool.

What Photopea actually is, and the two things that trip people up

Photopea is a full raster editor written to run inside a browser tab. It opens and saves PSD with layers, masks and smart objects; it reads AI, PDF, INDD, Figma, SVG and, in its own words, 40 other formats; and it develops RAW from DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RW2, RAF, ORF and FFF. There is no installer and no account gate. It is ad-supported, and Premium costs 5 USD per month. The post announcing Premium is unusually blunt — it says the tier “does not give you any extra features” — and the two benefits we found documented elsewhere on the site are narrow: the API accounts page says Premium removes the advertising, and the AI tutorial says a Premium account can run the built-in AI hundreds of times a month. All three pages checked 14 September 2026. The most underrated property is privacy: Photopea states the file is processed by your own CPU and GPU, and its Storages page lists the places it can read and write files — your own device, Google Drive, Dropbox, One Drive, and Peadrive, Photopea’s own cloud, which you get simply by logging in. Those are the routes that page documents for a file leaving your machine, and every one of them is a storage you pick. That is a meaningfully different posture from a tool that uploads by design, though we have not audited it.

All files open instantly, and never leave your device.
— photopea.com, checked 14 September 2026

That line is Photopea’s own, from its home page, checked 14 September 2026. It is a statement of how the editor is built, not a measurement we took.

So where does it go wrong? Two places, and neither is a bug. First, it is built for someone who already thinks in layers. The interface is a faithful copy of a professional tool, which means the fifteen-minute path to "remove the bin from this photo" is only fifteen minutes if you already own the muscle memory — selection, content-aware fill, clone stamp, healing, a mask to clean up the seam. If you do not, the ceiling you hit is your own, not the software’s. Second, very large documents run on your machine’s memory, so a huge multi-layer composite behaves the way your laptop behaves, not the way a server would.

Correction worth making, because the one long-form page on this keyword we read end to end still gets it wrong: Photopea does have AI tools now. Remove BG and Magic Replace ship inside it, with a monthly allowance on the Premium account and the option of pointing it at your own third-party generation account for more. Any comparison that opens with "Photopea has no AI" is not describing an older version — it is wrong on the facts, because the developer published the tutorial for those tools in February 2024. Checked 14 September 2026.

Is Photopea itself the free Photoshop alternative you were looking for?

For most people typing that, yes — and it is worth being precise about what the phrase buys. Photopea opens and saves PSD, and its home page lists layers, masks, layer styles, smart objects, adjustment layers, channels and paths: the part of the Photoshop feature set most people actually touch. It costs nothing and needs no account. Even the browser part is less of a limit than it sounds — Photopea’s own Learn page says you can load the editor, disconnect from the internet and keep working offline. Where the phrase starts to mean something else is print production: Affinity lists PDF with bleed and crop marks among its export formats and calls the output print-ready, checked 14 September 2026. It is also free and also a Photoshop alternative, at the cost of a download and a Canva account. So: to open a layered file and edit it without paying, Photopea is already the answer. For press-ready output, take the free desktop app instead.

How to choose a Photopea alternative

Every competitor number below was re-checked on 14 September 2026 against the vendor’s own site, and the exact page is linked in the row it came from; the ReelWand row comes from our own billing code instead. Only two of the five publish a pricing page: Pixlr and Canva. Photopea’s 5 USD is the figure in the developer’s own announcement post, which carries a 2016 date and no update stamp we can read; Photopea’s own API page says the live price sits in the Account window inside the app, and that is a window we did not open. GIMP publishes no price anywhere we could find, and Affinity’s home page says the app is free, with enterprise sent to a contact-sales form rather than a figure. Note also how few of these Photopea alternatives are really competitors: GIMP and Affinity cost nothing at all, Pixlr and Canva both run a free tier, and two of the six rows below — Canva and ReelWand — are not pixel editors in the first place.

ToolCost (checked 14 Sep 2026)Genuinely good atWatch-out
Photopea (the incumbent)Free with ads; Premium $5/mo (announcement post, dated 2016)PSD, layers, masks, RAW, exact pixel work, privacyPremium is a tip jar; the two perks we found documented are no ads and a monthly AI allowance
GIMP 3.2.6Free, GNU GPL, open source (gimp.org)The deepest free editor on this page; GIMP 3.2 documents a scripting and plug-in APIInstalled desktop app; steepest interface on this page

PixlrFree tier with ads; Plus $2.49/mo ($1.99 billed yearly); Premium $9.99/mo ($7.99 yearly) (pixlr.com/pricing)A lighter browser editor that still has layersAI is metered in credits, so heavy use changes the maths
CanvaFree; Pro $144/yr; Business $250/yr per person (canva.com/pricing)Layout, templates and headline typographyNot a pixel-level editor; PSD import is in beta (checked 14 Sep 2026) and it cannot save PSD back
ReelWand1 watermarked render per IP per day with no account; 8 one-time free credits; paid from $15/moGeneration jobs: erase an object, relight a product, restore a printNo layers, masks, PSD or RAW. JPEG output only

One reason to distrust an undated price column: the one long-form page on this keyword we read end to end — playyy.ai, 1,476 words, published 11 June 2026, cached by us on 11 September 2026 — still sells Affinity Photo as a $69.99 one-time purchase and calls $1.99 a year the Premium tier at Pixlr. Neither holds today. Affinity is free, which its own home page states outright, and $1.99 billed yearly is Pixlr’s Plus tier — Premium is $7.99 billed yearly. Both re-checked against the vendors’ own pages on 14 September 2026. A price column with no date attached goes stale in months, which is why every number in ours carries one.

If you want the long version of the free-editor comparison — GIMP versus Affinity versus Photopea on depth, install friction and print output — that is a separate page: the best Photoshop alternatives, sorted by job. If you landed here from a phone-editing app rather than a desktop one, Picsart alternatives covers that side of the same question.

Where ReelWand fits, and five places it does not

Honest positioning first, because it disqualifies us for a lot of people reading a Photopea comparison. ReelWand is not an editor. It is about seventy task-named image agents — one for erasing objects, one for product shots, one for headshots, one for restoring old photos — and each one takes an upload plus a sentence and returns a new image. You never open a canvas. That is the whole trade: you give up precise control and you get the twenty-minute manual job done in one pass.

  • No layers and no masks. There is no canvas, no layer stack, nothing to composite. If your job is compositing, stay on Photopea or GIMP.
  • No PSD, and no way to open one. We take an image upload; we do not read layered documents, and we cannot hand one back.
  • No transparent PNG. Output is JPEG, which has no alpha channel — so a cut-out on a checkerboard background is impossible here. Photopea, GIMP and dedicated background removers all do this; we do not.
  • No RAW development, no colour management, no print output. Three fixed output sizes — 1024×1024, 1280×720 and 720×1280 — and no exact pixel targeting, so if you need a 2560×1440 banner or a CMYK press file this is the wrong tool.
  • One job at a time. A session runs one generation at a time; a second request while one is in flight is rejected rather than queued. There is no bulk upload and no batch API.

The "no sign-up" line needs its real numbers attached, because the phrase almost never means unlimited — ours included. A visitor with no account gets one watermarked render per IP per day. Creating a free account grants 8 credits once — two images at 4 credits each — and it never refills; a one-time referral bonus can add one more render, and that is the ceiling. Those images come out watermarked, at the same three fixed sizes every paid plan gets — the free tier’s wedge is the watermark, not the resolution. That is enough to judge the output quality and nothing more. Anyone telling you a generation tool is free and unlimited is not counting something.

The per-render arithmetic against a $5 subscription

This is the comparison that actually decides it, and the incumbent page we read in full never runs it. Start by getting the other side of it right: Photopea’s editing is free. The $5 Premium tier buys ad removal and a metered monthly AI allowance, not the editor. ReelWand bills per render: every image costs 4 credits, and credits come in monthly buckets that reset with the billing period and do not roll over. Billing is a monthly Stripe subscription, and as of 14 September 2026 Stripe is the only checkout — no one-off purchase, no lifetime tier, no annual plan.

PlanPrice / monthCreditsImages (4 credits each)Per image
Plus$15400100$0.15
Premium$391,200300$0.13
Pro$993,600900$0.11
Max$25910,8002,700$0.10
Ultra$64932,4008,100$0.08

Read that honestly and it tells you to stay on Photopea for anything you can already do yourself. Fifteen dollars buys a hundred images here. Nothing at all buys a month of unlimited manual editing there, and the optional five dollars only takes the ads away. We are only cheaper in the sense that a taxi is cheaper than a driving licence — you are paying for the job to be finished, not for the tool. The break-even is your own time: if a clean object removal takes you fifteen minutes in Photopea and you value an hour at anything above $0.60, one render wins. If it takes you ninety seconds because you have been doing this for a decade, it does not.

A practical hybrid worth setting up: keep Photopea open for anything structural — crops to exact sizes, alpha cut-outs, opening the PSD a designer sent — and reach for a generator only for the jobs that are genuinely hard by hand, like rebuilding the background behind something you removed. The two are not really competing for the same half-hour.

When you genuinely need layers, PSD or RAW, stay put

Four situations where every alternative on this page is a downgrade and you should close this tab. You have been sent a layered file — only a real editor opens it, and Photopea does it in a browser with no install. You need a transparent PNG — an alpha channel is a file-format fact, not a feature request, and no JPEG-only generator can fake it. You need an exact output size — YouTube channel art, print bleeds, ad slots with hard pixel specs; generators hand you their own dimensions and upscaling to hit a spec introduces its own problems. You are developing RAW — Photopea reads the files, and a Lightroom-class app does it better still; see Lightroom alternatives for that specific question. There is no version of "AI is faster" that survives any of those four.

A 15-minute switch test

Do not migrate on an argument. Run this once on a real file and the answer decides itself.

  1. Pick the single edit you make most often — the actual recurring one, not an interesting one.
  2. Do it in Photopea and time it honestly, including the fiddling at the end.
  3. Ask whether the output has to be a specific pixel size or carry transparency. If yes, stop here — you have your answer, and it is Photopea.
  4. Do the same edit in a generator and compare the result at 100% zoom, not at thumbnail size, looking specifically at edges and any text in the frame.
  5. Multiply your Photopea time by how often you do this in a month, and compare that against the per-image cost above.

Step four is where most of the surprises are. A generator rebuilds a region rather than patching it, which usually looks better on complex backgrounds — foliage, crowds, brickwork — and can look worse on a flat gradient a healing brush would have nailed. It will also re-render the whole image, so anything small and textual in the frame is worth checking at full zoom. The detailed version of that comparison lives in how to remove an object from a photo, and the wider question of what an AI editor does and does not replace is covered in AI photo editor vs Photoshop.

Erase something and let the background behind it be rebuilt — one pass, no clone stamp, no layer stack.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Photopea alternative?+

It depends on the job, and for a lot of jobs the honest answer is that there is no better option than staying. For layers, PSD files, transparent PNGs, exact pixel sizes and RAW, Photopea already wins and the alternatives are downgrades. For the deepest free editor on this page, scripting included, GIMP 3.2.6. For pixel, vector and layout in one free desktop app, Affinity — though downloading it requires a Canva account. For generation jobs such as erasing an object and rebuilding the background behind it, a per-render AI tool like ReelWand finishes in one pass what Photopea makes you do by hand.

Is Photopea completely free, and what does Premium cost?+

Photopea is free and supported by ads, with no account required to start, and the layer editing is part of that free product. Premium is 5 USD a month, a number that comes from the developer’s own announcement post — a post dated 2016, which states plainly that the tier unlocks no extra features. The two benefits we found documented elsewhere are narrow: the API accounts page says Premium removes the advertising, and the AI tutorial says a Premium account can run the built-in AI hundreds of times a month. All three pages checked 14 September 2026.

Does Photopea have AI tools now?+

Yes — and it is the first thing worth checking before you trust any list on this keyword, because the one long-form page we read in full still says the opposite. Photopea ships AI features including background removal and a Magic Replace tool, with a monthly allowance attached to the Premium account and the option to connect your own third-party generation account if you need more than that. Checked 14 September 2026. Any list whose central argument is that Photopea has no AI at all was wrong when it was published, not merely overtaken — the developer’s tutorial for those tools is dated February 2024 — so its rankings should be treated with suspicion.

Can ReelWand open PSD files or give me a transparent PNG?+

No to both, and neither is on the way. ReelWand takes a flat image upload and returns a JPEG, and JPEG has no alpha channel, so a cut-out on a transparent background is not something it can produce. It does not read layered documents and cannot write one either. Output comes in three fixed sizes — 1024×1024, 1280×720 and 720×1280 — so exact pixel targeting is also out. For any of those, use Photopea, GIMP or a dedicated background remover instead.

What is the cheapest way to remove one object from a photo?+

Free, if you do it yourself: Photopea and GIMP are both full raster editors with the selection and retouching tooling for the job — GIMP’s own About page describes it as a program for photo retouching — and Photopea additionally ships a Magic Replace tool, with the monthly allowance attached to the 5 USD Premium account. The cost is your time and your skill with a clone stamp, particularly on a complex background where the fill has to invent plausible texture. If you would rather pay for the outcome, ReelWand charges 4 credits a render, which works out between $0.08 and $0.15 per image depending on the plan.

Is Photopea safe to use with a client’s photo?+

Photopea states that files are processed on your own device using your CPU and GPU and never leave it, and its own Storages page lists the places it reads and writes files: your own device, Google Drive, Dropbox, One Drive, and Peadrive, Photopea’s own cloud, which appears as soon as you log in. Checked 14 September 2026; we have not independently audited the claim, and choosing one of those storages is the documented route by which a file does leave your machine. It is a meaningfully different privacy position from a tool that uploads to a server by design, which makes it a reasonable choice for a photo you would not paste into an unknown website. Any cloud-based AI generator, ReelWand included, works the opposite way by necessity — the image is uploaded so a model can process it — so read the terms before putting a confidential file through one.

What are the best sites and apps like Photopea?+

Split the question by where you want it to run. In a browser, the closest thing on this page is Pixlr: it keeps layers, adds a simpler editor alongside the full one, and is free with ads, with Plus at $2.49 a month ($1.99 billed yearly), checked 14 September 2026. As installed software, GIMP 3.2.6 is the deepest free option here and the one to take for scripting and plug-ins, while Affinity gives you pixel, vector and layout studios plus press-ready export for nothing, although downloading it requires a Canva account. Be warned about the lists themselves: on the one we read end to end, four of its seven “websites like Photopea” are not editors at all — they are template tools such as Canva, or AI generators such as this one.

Does Photopea have a desktop app?+

Not as a download you install — as of 14 September 2026 we could find no desktop build offered anywhere on photopea.com. What Photopea documents instead is close: its Learn page says you can open the editor at photopea.com, disconnect from the internet and keep using it completely offline, because the whole thing is an HTML file, a CSS file and a few JavaScript files running on your own machine. Two other routes are on the API accounts page — a distributor account that runs Photopea white-labelled inside your own site, and a self-hosted package priced between $500 and $2,000 a month, which is aimed at organisations rather than individuals. If what you want is a desktop app you install from a download, that is an argument for GIMP or Affinity. Both pages checked 14 September 2026.
