It depends on the country. The US and UK explicitly let babies under one keep their eyes closed, and the Schengen area and India are similarly lenient for under-1s — but Canada and Australia still want a baby’s eyes open and only relax the expression. The agent keeps both eyes open when your photo allows and preserves the closed-eyes result when it does not, so you are not stuck reshooting a sleeping baby; check your own country’s rule before you submit.

You can hold or support them to take the shot — that is the only realistic way with an infant — as long as no one else is visible in the final photo. Lay the baby on a plain white sheet or support them against it, then the agent erases your hands, arms and any strap and rebuilds clean white behind them, so the finished photo shows only your baby.

It is built to the published rules — correct size, a plain background in the shade your country requires, a forward-facing pose, even lighting with no shadows or red-eye, and the regulation head size. The United States uses 2×2 in (51×51 mm); the UK, the Schengen area, much of Europe — and, since 2025, India — use 35×45 mm; Canada uses 50×70 mm; Australia is close to 35–45×45–50 mm. Backgrounds differ too (white in the US, light grey or cream in the UK and EU), so pick your destination and the agent sizes and styles the photo to that country’s spec.
